Installing a dental implant requires placing a screw like post into the gums, adding an abutment or transitionary piece, then topping it with a crown or bridge. A dental implant can be used to replace one tooth, a few teeth in a row, or the entire row of top or bottom teeth with four posts to support a bridge.

In cases where the top jawbone is so deteriorated that even with a bone graft it can not hold a regular implant the zygomatic implant can be used.

Its important to make sure we understand the difference between Zirconia and Zygomatic dental implants.

What Is Zygomatic Implant?

It is important not mix Zirconia dental implants which are Metal-Free Dental Implants with Zygomatic dental implants.

Unlike a regular implant that is fused to the jaw bone, the zygomatic is installed up through the top gums and into the zygoma bones that are found on either side of the face and towards the cheekbones. These implant posts are longer than the others and follow beside the sinus cavity to the cheekbones to provide a stable base for the replacement teeth to be attached to.

Often two regular implants are used near the front of the mouth to support the bridge or other prosthesis, but when the bone is unable to support that two zygomatic ones may be installed on each side to add additional support.

Due to the stability and placement of these implants, it is possible to install a temporary bridge or prosthesis immediately, with a permanent one added later when the healing process has completed. This is one way in which a person can have the appearance of a full set of upper teeth immediately without the multiple appointments required by most other implant procedures.

Learn More about the Advantages of This Dental Treatment

Other advantages to the use of zirconia for dental implants include that it will not corrode as a metal can eventually but will maintain it’s colour and shape for it’s entire lifespan. As a non-metal it is not susceptible to damage from being wet or from the bacteria in the saliva that can damage metals. There are also studies to show that zirconia implants will form less plaque and build up around them then a titanium one may, which can lead to fewer gum concerns and fewer cavities in the surrounding teeth.

While there is a risk of infection as the gums must be opened to implant the post, following proper aftercare and taking any antibiotics provided will keep that risk low and manageable. The dental implant will last a lifetime and should not require replacement, although the crown that tops it may require repair or replacement. Once the implant post is fused to the jawbone it becomes permanent and will support the regular use of the tooth.

As a dental implant is a permanent addition in the mouth it is important to know all of the options, the benefits, and the risks before proceeding. Our dentist is available for your consultation in Vancouver, and our professional staff will present all options and help to decide what is the best choice for you and your circumstances.
